Marmelão Winery: A Pét-Nat Project in the Heart of the Douro

Hidden in the timeless landscape of Provesende, in Portugal’s Douro Valley, Marmelão is not a conventional winery. It is a small, family-driven project dedicated entirely to one style of wine: Pét-Nat — naturally sparkling, alive, and expressive.

At Marmelão, the focus is clear. No range of styles. No diversification. Just one idea explored deeply and honestly.

A Family Project Rooted in the Village

Marmelão is built by family hands. Small in scale and rustic in spirit, the winery grows slowly and intentionally, respecting both the land and the rhythm of village life.

Every decision — from vineyard work to bottling — reflects a commitment to authenticity rather than volume. There is no ambition for mass production. The goal is to create wines that feel alive and personal, wines meant to be shared around a table rather than displayed on a shelf.

Why Pét-Nat?

Pétillant Naturel is one of the oldest methods of making sparkling wine. The wine finishes fermentation in the bottle, creating natural bubbles without heavy manipulation.

For Marmelão, this method represents freedom and honesty.

Working with organically farmed vineyards and low-intervention practices, the wines are bottled while fermentation is still active. There are no unnecessary corrections, no excessive filtration, and minimal additions. What remains is texture, freshness, and energy — a direct expression of grape, place, and year.

Each harvest is different. Each batch carries its own personality.

A Living Wine

Marmelão’s Pét-Nats are vibrant, fresh, and slightly unpredictable — in the best possible way. They may show gentle cloudiness, subtle sediment, or evolving aromas in the glass. This is not a flaw, but part of their living character.

Expect brightness, tension, and a dry, refreshing finish shaped by the altitude and soils of the Douro Valley.

These are wines meant to be opened with curiosity.

Small Production, Thoughtful Bottling

Production remains limited. Every bottle is filled, handled, and prepared with attention. There is no rush — only patience and observation.

Marmelão does not chase trends; it follows instinct and experience. By focusing exclusively on Pét-Nat, the project gains clarity and depth, refining technique year after year.

Opening to Visitors

Opening to the public in 2025, Marmelão will welcome guests who are curious about natural sparkling wines and small-scale winemaking. Visits will be intimate and personal, centered on conversation, vineyard walks, and tastings that explain the philosophy behind each bottle.

This is not a polished luxury destination. It is a working family winery where you can see the hands, the tools, and the effort behind every cork.

An Invitation

Marmelão is a quiet, evolving project — dedicated to one style, one method, and a deep respect for place.

If you are exploring the Douro Valley and wish to discover a different expression of the region — fresh, sparkling, and alive — Marmelão invites you to taste Pét-Nat at its source.

Simple. Honest. Naturally sparkling.
