About Marmelão

Marmelão is a very small winery in Provesende, one of the most beautiful villages in the Douro Valley. It is not a conventional tasting room, and it is not open every day. Marmelão opens only on Saturdays, from April to October, for one shared table and a small group.

At Marmelão, everything revolves around pét-nat — a wine style that reflects our scale, our pace, and our way of working the land.

Provesende and the Place

Perched above the Douro River, Provesende is a historic village known for its stone houses, narrow streets, and long agricultural memory. The landscape is dramatic but quiet, shaped by terraces, old vines, and seasonal rhythms.

Marmelão is part of this village fabric. The winery is simple and rustic, integrated into the vineyard and the surrounding land. There is no separation between where the grapes grow, where the wine ferments, and where people sit at the table. The atmosphere is informal, calm, and intentionally small.

Why Pét-Nat

Pét-nat is the natural expression of Marmelão.

We work organically in the vineyard, harvest early, and intervene as little as possible in the cellar. Pét-nat allows us to bottle the wine while it is still fermenting, capturing freshness, energy, and the character of the year without correction or manipulation.

This style suits our scale: small parcels, small volumes, and close attention to each step. It is a wine that rewards patience, observation, and trust — the same values that guide our work in the vineyard.

Saturdays at Marmelão

Marmelão is open only on Saturdays.

Each visit follows the same simple structure:

  • A slow walk through the vineyard, guided by the season
  • Time at the table with our pét-nat
  • A long lunch, cooked and shared together
  • Open conversation about land, wine, food, and time

There is no fixed script and no formal tasting format. What changes each Saturday is the season, the food, and the conversation. What remains constant is the table, the pace, and the attention.

Groups are limited to a maximum of eight people.

The Experience

Visiting Marmelão is not about comparing wines or following tasting notes. It is about spending a few unhurried hours in one place, understanding how a vineyard becomes a wine, and how food, wine, and conversation naturally come together.

The visit is guided by the winemaker, who shares the realities of small-scale farming and pét-nat production — including the uncertainties, decisions, and seasonal challenges that shape each year.

Food and the Table

Food is an essential part of Marmelão.

Lunch is prepared on the day using local, seasonal ingredients, often inspired by simple Portuguese cooking. The meal is designed to be shared, without courses or ceremony, allowing the pét-nat to be enjoyed slowly and in context.

The table is where questions are asked, stories are told, and time stretches.
